"Say Yes to (Most) Things!"

Hi all,

It's been a while since I've posted on here, so I'd just like to say "Hi!" I've missed you, and I'm sorry for the delay. It's currently 10:18PM on a Monday, and I just wanted to write this post to put my thoughts onto (virtual) paper and see if this might resonate with any of you. So, it's my sophomore year of college (N***a we made it!) and I found myself getting invited to join many clubs/organizations and many other opportunities. As the kind, gentle person that I am, I of course said, "Yes!" to all of them. Long story short, I quickly found out how much is too much for me, and had to make a change.

Rather than say yes to everything, say yes to most things.

Today I officially dropped my position as a TA for my SOC 019: Race Relations in the U.S. class. It took a long and hard internal debate for me to arrive at this decision, but at the end I knew it was the right one. The point of this blog isn't to make you question your life decisions, but to encourage you to look into yourself, learn what is your limit and how much is too much. Definitely say yes to as many things as you can (I highly encourage it!), but also know how much you can actually handle. Rather than say yes to everything, say yes to most things.

I quickly learned that taking 14 credits and also having 3 paid jobs and being a part of an executive team for a club and volunteering as a peer mentor, was too much for me. However, this isn't the same for everyone. Everyone has different levels and degrees of work they can handle, and some people are more susceptible to stress and anxiety than others. Some people can have 6 jobs and not feel overworked, while other people can have 2 jobs and feel extremely overwhelmed – and that's fine! This doesn't mean that the person with 2 jobs is lazy and is less likely to be successful than the person with 6 jobs. In fact, this means nothing!

The amount of work you do doesn't equate to the amount of success you'll have.

The amount of work you do doesn't equate to the amount of success you'll have. It is not the number of jobs that you have that will make you successful, but the quality of your work – I'm finally understanding this. So, I've decided to take a step back. I liked my TA position, but I didn't LOVE it. I'm not going to waste my time doing work that doesn't bring me joy, and that I'm not passionate about. Just like life is too short to waste time on mediocre friends, life is too short to waste your time doing mediocre work. If it is not something that I am passionate about and brings me joy while doing it then I'm sorry, but I'm not taking the job. It's a "No" from me.

P.S. Thanks for reading lovelies! Hope you enjoyed this little "piece of advice" from me and got something from it that you will take with you when stepping into your future endeavors and making career moves. That being said, I LOVE the "jobs" that I am involved in now, and the people I work with. I can't wait to see what this semester brings!
