Spoken Word: "Dear Newborn Child"
On Friday I went to a spoken word event down on Church Street. The event was run by the Young Writers Project, which aims to bring writing and poetry to young people by inspiring them to write their own masterpieces. These young writers blew me awayyy with their writing. Their poems were thought-provoking, heart-wrenching, complex, and moving. To kick off the event and get the audience thinking, we were made to sit and write for 7 minutes about a prompt given to us. Even though my writing will never be as good as the young people who had performed, I would like to share with you all what I wrote. And hey, maybe you guys can try out the prompt for yourselves and see what you can come up with! I'd love to see your writing creations, so please share them with me at naydeme@gmail.com if you do decide to do it.
Prompt: Write a letter to a newborn child, introducing them to the world as you see it today.
Dear child,
Welcome...to Earth...to society...to life. You have arrived. Before I let you out onto the Earth, I must warn you. I must warn you that you will feel pain, both emotional and physical. You will feel fear, which is the worst pain. It will hinder you from aiming for your dreams, but my child if you are strong you will persevere. You will feel joy — such great joy. You will feel peace, when you deeply connect with the earth beneath your feet. And most and best of all, you will feel love. You will feel love from all those around you and your love will overpower hate. Good luck!
Yours truly,
A friend
