DIY: (Dorm) Room Decor
Inspired by @laurDIY
Here I'm going to show you how to create two DIYs to add some color and Tumblr aesthetics to your walls in your bedroom or college dorm (I have these pieces hanging on my own dorm room walls). These DIYs are inspired by the lovely and very creative Lauren Riihimaki from @laurDIY. Make sure to check out her YouTube channel here!
DIY Diamond Cut-Out Poster:
What You'll Need: Magazines - Cardstock - Scissors - Paintbrush - Mod Podge or Glue - Canvas/Poster Paper
"This is how we (you) do it! Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahhh..."
1. First, you'll need to cut your piece of card-stock into a triangular shape — this will be your stencil. If you don't have card-stock, don't worry, you can use a postcard lying around your house or any thick piece of paper. For my "card-stock", I used a postcard I received from my university (sorry UVM!).
2. Using your magazines, browse through the pages and using your stencil, cut out photos, designs, or patterns that appeal to you. Let your creative juices flow for this one! You can be as random or consistent as you want with the images that you choose. You can follow a color scheme with your diamond if you'd like, or you cannot and have it look like a unicorn literally threw up on your poster. Either way, your poster will turn out looking amazing!
3. Time to put it all together! Once you've got a good amount of triangular cut-outs, it's time to create your diamond on your poster or canvas (I used about 14 cut-outs for my poster, but you can use either less or more depending on how big or small you want your diamond). Start by arranging your cut-outs into a diamond formation on your poster, making sure to leave a little bit of white space between each triangle.
Once you are happy with your layout, you can start to permanently glue on all the triangles onto your poster (If you're using Mod Podge, it's best to use a paintbrush to apply the adhesive onto the paper cut-outs to then paste onto your poster/canvas). And you're done!
DIY Ombré Wall Art:
What You'll Need: - Paintbrush(s) - Acrylic Paint (White and Color of Your Choice) - Paint Tray/Palette (Optional) - Poster Paper/Canvas
How To Do The Thing:
1. Grab your paint, in your favorite color, and pour some onto a paint tray/palette or literally anything that can hold paint that you have lying around your house (i.e. paper/styrofoam plate, this green "thingy" I'm using or something like it).
2. Using a thick paint brush, take some of your paint and paint a super thick line on your poster paper or canvas, starting from the top of your paper to the bottom of it (as you draw your line, the paint will start to fade a bit at the end and that's ok, it's supposed to do that — it looks cool okay!).
3. For your next line of paint, add some white paint to your paint color to create a lighter hue. Taking your paintbrush, draw another fat line with your new color, right next to your previous line (don't worry if your second line does not match your first line, they don't have to be consistent and I think it looks even better when the lines are a bit uneven).
4. Continue to add white paint to your previously used color to get lighter and lighter shades of your original color, creating an ombré effect on your poster/canvas.
5. Once you've reached the other end of your poster in faded lines, you are done!
This post is long overdue (I created these DIYs in August), but it's finally here. I hope you enjoyed it!
